Work in Germany for students on holidays: FAQ

Work in Germany for students

Recruitment is opened

Work in the summer or winter, learn languages, and enjoy traveling. Employers are already waiting!

from €890
What level of German and English is required to participate in the program?

The level of German must be at least A2, and the level of English must be Intermediate. For work in big cities, the level of German should be no lower than Intermediate.

Will the language level affect the offered position?

Participants in the program with a good command of the German language have a better chance of receiving job offers for higher positions. Those with a basic language level mainly work as cleaners or housekeepers.

Is it difficult to pass the interview on language proficiency?

One of the steps for applying to the Working holiday in Germany program is a Skype interview with the program sponsor. The interview takes place in an informal manner, on general and simple topics — where you study, why you want to go on the program, your hobbies, etc.

How to pay for the program?

After signing the contract, the IEC will charge an enrollment fee of €300 within 7 calendar days. The second part of the program cost is paid within 14 calendar days after the sponsor finds a job offer and the participant confirms it.

Can I travel after the end of the program?

The work program in Germany does not have a “travel period,” as, for example, in the Work and Travel USA program. Therefore, participants travel around the country on weekends. Additionally, you can talk to your employer in advance; they may give you more days off or adjust your work schedule.

Can I participate in the program twice a year — during summer and winter breaks?

Participation in the program is allowed once a year — either in the summer or winter holidays.

Do I need to bring additional finances?

It is necessary. Upon arrival in Germany, participants are recommended to have with them at least 900-1150 euros. Participants may expect expenses for food, accommodation, and public transport.

When can I fly to Germany?

The optimal arrival date is set by the program sponsor 2-4 weeks before departure. Participants must purchase tickets only after the sponsor sends the arrival dates.

How many hours do participants work?

Usually, program participants work 38-40 hours a week, but some employers offer work for 30-35 hours per week. Also, be prepared for overtime, which is quite common in the service and tourism sector.

Where do participants live?

Many employers offer accommodation, but not always for free — the employer may deduct the rental cost from the salary.
If the employer does not offer housing, the program sponsor in Germany will help find accommodation — participants can live in families, youth hostels, or rent apartments (prices start from 500 euros per month; in large cities — from 500 euros to 800 euros).

My friend and I are going together; can we work in the same city?

This option is possible but not guaranteed. When applying for the arrangement, you will need to provide the name and surname of the friend you are going with.

Can I choose the city where I want to work?

Program participants need to be sufficiently “flexible” regarding location — an offer can come from any city.

What is the minimum salary?

The minimum wage in Germany is 9.35 euros per hour.

Can I work for two employers?

All work permits will be issued only for one specific employer, so it will not be possible to work for two employers.

When do participants receive their salary?

Usually, salaries are paid at the beginning of the month. That is, participants receive their first salary at the beginning of the second working month.

How do participants receive their salary?

Most employers pay salaries to a credit card, but opening a bank account in Germany for program participants is quite challenging. There is no need to worry — the IEC office will provide information on how to proceed in this situation.

What about taxes?

The employer pays taxes for employees, which are deducted from their salary. These taxes can be refunded the following year.
